On information received from his descendant great grandniece.

I really enjoyed your page on the 47th Wisconsin - my relation is RJO McGowan. He was my gr gr uncle, and his younger brother Adam also enlisted in the I Co. 1st Cav Reg. WI, March 29, 1864. RJO's full name was Robert James Orr, the first-born of six children born to Alexander Orr and Margaret McKittrick McGowan. Robert enlisted three times - first as a Musician - May 5, 1861 in G Co. 5th Inf Reg., WI - and then had been discharged with a disability. He re-enlisted Feb. 27, 1864 as an unassigned recruit in the 33rd WI Infantry, and was again honorably discharged by General Order to accept a commission as Captain. He enrolled as Captain of Co. B, 47th Wisconsin Inf., Feb. 24, 1865, and was discharged at Nashville, TN, Sept. 4, 1865. After the war he entered the mercantile business, married and had a family. He died June 16, 1907, and is buried in Iowa Falls in the Union Cemetery there. I am fortunate to have a complete obituary on him - and it was very informative. I treasure it! I hope this is enough detail for your records - please let me know when you receive this - I always wonder long how it takes these emails to reach their destinations.

Yes - go ahead and put a bio on for RJO. I am having a hard time finding his descendents and maybe doing this will serve a dual purpose. I would love to know what he played as a musician when he first enlisted. I'm also a musician and was pleased to find out that particular detail. If you need to know more about him feel free to ask and I'll do the best I can.
